Our Affiliates History
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth, Inc., is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization incorporated under the laws of Massachusetts and is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Habitat for Humanity (both the international organization and its local affiliates)is a nondenominational, Christian housing organization that welcomes all people to join in building simple, decent, affordable, houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. The mission of our affiliate is the same as that of Habitat for Humanity International - To eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
In pursuit of that goal, our affiliate strives to provide affordable housing to families in need in the 'Cranberry Country' of Plymouth, Carver, Plympton, Middleborough, Lakeville and Kingston, Massachusetts. Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth was recognized as an affiliate of Habitat International in 1997 after beginning as a chapter of South Shore Habitat for Humanity in 1995. We completed our first home in 1999 and continue to build homes as well as complete special projects such as critical additions and wheelchair ramps. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.

Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit, financed with affordable, no-interest loans. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are used to build still more Habitat houses. The partner family also pays all property taxes and insurance on the home. Habitat is not a giveaway program - it is a HAND UP and not a hand out. In addition to a down payment and the monthly mortage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor -- sweat equity -- into building their Habitat house and the houses of others.Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth is managed by a Board of Directors made up of volunteers drawn from the communities we serve. Board members serve limited, rotating terms. Committees focus on specific areas, such as construction or public relations, and conduct much of the business of our affliate.
